Native Illinoisians will tell you that their winters are cold, but they will also tell you that it is so worth it. The snow can make things difficult for the citizens, but they will all tell you that they would not miss winter for anything. This year with COVID restrictions, many people in the Chicagoland area are feeling deprived of their usual wintertime activities.
The Western suburbs of Chicago is making sure to keep up with years past by changing and reinventing events that could not be done the same as before.
To keep the holiday spirit alive, and to keep the people happy, here are some of the most fun events in the western suburbs to get you into the mood for the Holidays.
One of the most brilliant light spectacles around, if you are missing walking around and seeing all the lights, this is something that has been able to stay mostly intact with COVID as people are permitted to be outside and to wear masks and distanced from each other. Brookfield Zoo puts on a magnificent light show yearly featuring over 1 million lights strung up around the park.
According to trekaroo.com, “Besides ice-carving demonstrations and a light show, you can listen to the 41-foot talking tree, learn about animals during Zoo Chats, and watch trains chug through at the model railroad display.” The event will run at Brookfield Zoo from Friday through Sunday, November 27-29, Wednesday through Sunday, December 2-6, 9-13, 16-20, Saturday through Thursday, December 26-31.
Happening all over the suburbs, this way of celebrating the Holidays has been around before you were even born! Thinking about our distant relatives riding around in a carriage to their celebrations makes us want to go out and do the same. Check out this link here to find the closest carriage ride to you. They are happening in Long Grove, Naperville, Clarendon Hills, and Homewood on various days and at various times. If you’re looking for the perfect holiday photo-opt, this could be the perfect place!
If you have kids that are dying to see Santa this Holiday season, finding the right opportunity for your family and to keep Santa safe can be hard. Carol Stream park district is throwing an epic “Grinchmas Breakfast” for kids and families alike. The event will feature “Santa and The Grinch visiting Fountain View Recreation Center turning it into Whoville! Dine on a pancake breakfast and enjoy a private visit with both Santa and The Grinch.” To maintain everyone’s safety, “Each family will be seated at their own table.
If you would like to be seated with a group outside your family please indicate when registering. A maximum of 8 people will be seated per table. Register by December 14. No refunds will be issued after the registration deadline. Face coverings must be worn at all times when not seated.” The event is scheduled for Dec. 19th, 2020 at 8 am.
A little more catered to adults, the Dundee community center is hosting a Holiday movie trivia night. With questions from all of your favorite holiday movies (and even some questions about the movies you haven’t seen!), it’s bound to be safe and fun for all. Running Monday, December 21, 2020, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm, Dundee Library 555 Barrington ave. East Dundee, IL.
If you are missing watching live events, musicals, plays, and performances, you must stop by the fox valley mall this season. It has a packed performances schedule and is hosting many talented local musicians to bring music and joy into your life this holiday season. “These performances are free of charge and are meant to be enjoyed by guests throughout the mall while they shop. No registration is required. While in the mall, COVID safety precautions including masks and social distancing will be strictly enforced.” according to the dailyherald.com.
The event is running every Friday, Saturday and Sunday the entire month of December with a few Tuesdays and Wednesdays sprinkled in. Check out the events calendar for more info, but make sure not to miss your favorite song!
Wanting to see a light show without getting out of the car? The Let It Shine Lightshow in Northbrook is hosting a touchless, safe, family light show that you can drive through and enjoy from your car. The show will let you be “immersed into a symphony of sight and sound in a wonderland of displays, synchronized to holiday classics from the comfort of their own car.”
The show is open rain, (snow) or shine and will run now – January 9, 2021. Located at the Northbrook Court Mall — 1515 Lake Cook Rd, Northbrook, IL.
